Paintings portray peaceful nature scenes

Pierre Bourque, a native of Ottawa who currently lives in Chilmark, has an exhibition of his landscapes, oils on canvas, at the Chilmark Public Library until Saturday, June 19. He studied art at the Ottawa School of Art, later becoming a member of the school’s board of directors. His paintings are in private collections in Canada and the United States.
Mr. Bourque says his art is influenced by Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and his uncle, R. C. Bourque, among others. His philosophy is that of J. B. Neumann, founder of the New Art Circle: “Art is life...secure and serene and timeless…unaging in the turmoil of politics and international affairs…independent of praise or blame…it lives when its spirit recreates the mind of its lover.”
